U.S. States That Have Banned Credit Cards for Sports Betting

Kindbridge Behavioral Health’s (KBH) sibling organization Kindbridge Research Institute (KRI), is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing research and solutions in behavioral addiction and mental health challenges. In the spring of 2025, KRI launched the Financial Stability and Responsible Gambling Initiative, the first coordinated effort in the United States to confront gambling-related financial harm as a public health issue.
In a joint effort between the two organizations, we are dedicated to educating individuals on key matters related to financial stress – which is intrinsically linked to mental health – with a focus on casino gaming and sports betting. The use of credit cards to gamble is innately connected to the issue, which has covered extensively in the linked article titled “Can I Use My Credit Card on Gambling Sites”. In the article, is discussion about how credit card issuers disincentivize the practice by often blocking gambling transactions, and when permitted, treats gambling transactions as cash advances. Cash advances generally come with transaction fees, higher interest rates, and zero grace periods (the time between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date) for those higher interest rates. The article also goes on to explore that in recognizing that rates/fees are not enough to deter habitual gamblers from using credit and getting into debt, select U.S. state gambling regulators have issued statewide bans on the acceptance of credit cards as forms of payment for online sports betting. Adding a layer of nuance to the discussion about where credit cards are banned for gambling on sports, is that sports betting is not regulated in all U.S. states, and that leading online sportsbook, DraftKings, stopped accepting credit cards on its platform as of August, 2025.
So where exactly are credit cards officially banned for gambling in states that regulate sports betting, in comparison to states where the query is disqualified due to sports betting being illegal? To provide clarity, Kindbridge has put together a U.S. map detailing where the former is the case, followed by a breakdown of the related laws per U.S. state. Check back every fiscal quarter as as we update the map as more regulators initiate credit card bans for gambling on sports.
