Helping Albuquerque NM Residents Overcome Problem Gambling

A 2018 study initiated by the Journal of Gambling Studies investigated the prevalence and potential factors of problem gambling among adults in New Mexico, which included residents of Albuquerque. It found that rates of problem gambling (roughly between 3-4%) were significantly higher than the national average. Keep in mind that this study was conducted before in-person sports betting became available to Albuquerque residents in the final fiscal quarter of the same year. While online sports betting remains illegal (as of 2025) there are at least three major hotel/casinos within or on the outskirts of Albuquerque, so of-age locals have open access to all general forms of gambling. It is therefore logical to deduce that the rate of problem gambling is now significantly higher than reported prior to the legalization of sports betting in the city of over 560,000.
The study also pointed to potential reasons, causations, and comorbidities regarding Albuquerque and New Mexico’s high rate of problem gambling. Sociodemographic factors relating to inflated rates among males, younger adults, and racial/ethnic minorities (namely Native Americans) in addition to cooccurring substance use disorders and adverse childhood experiences showed strong associations with problem gambling. Meanwhile, the study neglected to analyze another at-risk population which is disproportionately large in Albuquerque – active and retired members of the United States military, which have a 3.5 times higher rate of problem gambling than civilians. Albuquerque has a large military population due to the presence of Kirtland Air Force Base and its employment of over 23,000 people including active duty, National Guard, and Reserve personnel. The base is the Air Force’s largest installation in the Air Force Material Command and hosts key military units like the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center and the 58th Special Operations Wing. The presence of active military and veterans significantly contributes to the Albuquerque economy – which unfortunately (considering rates of problem gambling) includes allocation of income to the area’s casinos in addition to illegal offshore betting sites that have invaded the city.
