Problem Gambling Treatment in Georgia

Casino gaming: Despite several legislative attempts to legalize casino gambling, no land-based casinos are permitted in Georgia. This includes tribal lands, which is generally a loophole used by other U.S. states to allow land-based casino gaming. New legislative initiatives are expected to be introduced in 2026, but for the time being the only way residents can gamble in casinos while within state limits is on casino boats. There are two casino boats running out of Georgia. One is docked in Brunswick, and the other in Savannah. Online sports betting: After yet another attempt in March of 2025, efforts to send a state constitutional amendment regarding the legalization of sports betting to voters failed in the state legislature once again. Sports betting remains illegal in Georgia. Daily fantasy sports (DFS) is also not permitted. However, like with online casinos, offshore operators have been able to infiltrate the market and register players. This is risky business for residents because offshore operators do not monitor for problematic gambling behavior among registered members, and offer zero access to support services. They also attempt to dissuade compromised players from self-excluding and closing their accounts.

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Development Disabilities reports (here and here) on a number of concerning gambling addiction statistics for the state. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

• 16% of teenage males in Georgia exhibit problematic gambling behavior, compared to 4.4% of teenage females in the state
• 4% the general adult population in Georgia have been assessed as having a gambling problem
• Nearly 8% of college students in Georgia 7.8% have been assessed as having a gambling problem

• Divorce rate for habitual gamblers is 31% compared to 21% for those who rarely gamble ( source )
• Suicide rate is 16 times higher for problem gamblers ( source )
