Problem Gambling Statistics July 2025: Online Search Data

Three months ago, Kindbridge Behavioral Health started publishing problem gambling statistics as they relate to online search data coming from the American public. Doing so helps identify trends and where to meet demand from individuals who are concerned about their relationship with gambling, or that of those they care about (more on the latter below). Below is a look at key points of interest for the month of July, 2025.

Overview of Online Search Statistics Relating to Problem Gambling Outreach in America for July 2025

Where Problem Gambling Outreach is Trending

The online search expression of “how to stop gambling” is frequently used by those who are caught in the throughs of problematic gambling behavior, have tried to quit on their own, and realize that they need assistance. For a brief moment they have taken a moment away from their smartphone casino gaming or sports betting app to seek support, hoping that Google will deliver a result that will connect them to a care provider who can provide the tools necessary to break the grip of gambling.

What you see above, is a graphical representation of where across the United States the search for “how to stop gambling” and semantically related variations (i.e. “how to quit gambling”, et cetera) is trending the most. For the current period, we see that state of Louisiana residents are reaching out more than the rest. Interestingly, Louisiana was not on the list of trending states when we published the problem gambling statistics for the month of June (view here). Has anything in particular caused this spike?

The only out-of-the-ordinary development, is that leading into July, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board announced a crack down against illegal offshore wagering and online sweepstakes agencies targeting Louisiana residents. Given that a large proportion of Louisiana gamblers continue to use unregulated platforms for casino gaming and sports betting, news of a crackdown may have encouraged a proportion of the state’s gambling population to rethink participation. Those among them who struggle to abstain may theoretically seek help to stop, especially when considering that offshore enterprises do not provide problem gambling monitoring and support services for compromised players. In either case, Kindbridge offers gambling addiction treatment services in Louisiana. These services are confidential, non-judgemental, welcoming, and highly effective.

What about the other states on the above Google Trends graph? Both Pennsylvania and New Jersey are gambling-friendly states from a regulatory perspective and consequently are consistently found among the top five or ten states for online search for “how to stop gambling”. Michigan and Minnesota are also no strangers to this unfortunate category.

Concern Over Friends Gambling Behavior Grows

Our online search data analysts have uncovered another category that most problem gambling statistics deliveries do not address – concern about problem gambling among friends. While our care coordinators regularly receive inquiries from spouses and romantic partners about their companions’ gambling behavior, there has been an uptick in communications regarding peer groups. Have a look at the Google search data below:

For the current period, there is not only consistent state-by-state search for “how to help a friend with a gambling problem” and “my friend is addicted to gambling”, but a significant-to-extremely high positive growth in search volume (“+ ∞”) for “how to help a friend with a gambling addiction”.

While indicative of an injurious state of affairs in America, there is a silver lining. Peer pressure among young adult males (the largest proportion of the problematic sports betting population) plays a significant role in the development of gambling behavior. In seeing that buddies, confidants, comrades, and pals are not only recognizing that someone they care about is struggling with gambling, but seeking insight into how to help them, we note that peers are not just a catalyst to gambling, but a potential inhibitor. At the very least they can be there as a part of a recovering problem gambler’s support system. View more on gambling peer pressure and prevention strategies right here.
